Lake Buena Vista- The AAU Taekwondo National Championship in Ft. Lauderdale, FL got off to a rousing start today with almost 800 athletes competing on Tuesday, July 3rd in the 5-13 year old Colored Belt divisions.
“ This was one of our biggest days ever with this particular group of athletes and we still were able to wrap things up before 7:00 pm,” said Mike Friello, National Chairman and Event Director.
All told, there are 1,990 individual athletes competing in Forms , Point Sparring, and Olympic Sparring this week. They will be joined by nearly 600 coaches and 125 AAU Certified Officials. Competition is scheduled over five full days with Tuesday and Friday (Forms Competition) being our largest. On Friday, just over 1,100 of our nearly 2,000 athletes will compete in both Individual and Team Forms competition.
July 4th we celebrated with our National Team Divisions. This included our Cadets (both 10-11 and 12-13 year old Black Belts), 14-17 and 18-32 year old Black Belts—both male and Female). Following competition, the AAU Taekwondo program will be hosting it’s Youth Athlete party for all 17 and under and athletes featuring a DJ, as well as soda, mini-burgers, pizza, and a hot fudge sundae bar!
