The AAU Taekwondo National Point Sparring Team kicked off with its Inaugural Training Camp on March 10-11 in Stafford, Virginia

Competitors in the Black belt, 12-32-year-old divisions who won gold at the 2017 AAU Taekwondo Nationals earned their spot on the first ever AAU Taekwondo National Point Sparring Team! Team members traveled from around the country to Stafford, Virginia to participate in the Inaugural Training Camp held March 10 & 11, 2018 with AAU National Coach, Arlene Limas and National Point Sparring Coach Felix Garcia. Training consisted of two days with 2-3 sessions each day. The training camp ended with local and regional athletes coming to join in for the spar-around final session, complete with AAU officials.

“The players entered the facility on Saturday morning nervous, anxious and excited.  The equally excited coaches greeted them and explained the importance of this historic moment in Taekwondo. Strangers were introduced to form pairs and those pairs were combined to form groups. GM Duncan Williams, North Indy Taekwondo Club, who traveled to the team training to support his athletes said, “By the end of day two, 20 individuals no longer existed. There were now the AAU/USA National Point Team.”

“I think I speak for Coach Garcia as well when I say, what a wonderful group of athletes. It was a pleasure training with them at our first National Point Team Training Camp! This is such an important step for AAU Taekwondo, acknowledgement of Point Fighters in our program will definitely be inspiring a greater number of athletes to set a goal of making this team. An increase to the athlete pool is always a great and exciting thing for national coaches,” said National Coach, Arlene Limas.

AAU is excited about growing this program and eventually testing their skills at other events.

Look for this historic team at the 2018 Taekwondo National Championship in Fort Lauderdale this July! They’ll be the ones wearing those really cool jackets (provided by our sponsor, AAMA), with big smiles and fighting harder than ever to be part of this team again.
