LAS VEGAS, Nev. (June 27, 2022) – The 2022 AAU Taekwondo National Championships kickoff on July 3 in Las Vegas, Nevada at the MGM Grand. Athletes will compete to break through and capture an AAU National Title and, in some cases, earn a spot on the AAU Taekwondo National Team.
Nearly 3,300 athletes representing 38 states and three countries will be traveling to Las Vegas and betting on themselves to earn a national championship. The 2022 AAU Taekwondo National Championships will showcase the following events:
Competitors are not just fighting for a title, they are also competing for a spot on the AAU National Teams. Athletes can earn a spot on the Olympic Sparring, Point Sparring, Sport Poomsae, and Traditional Forms AAU National Teams. All Point Sparring and Sport Poomsae teams will be determined at the National Championship by virtue of capturing 1st place in single elimination competition or in the individual recognized division. All traditional forms Team Members shall be determined at the National Championship by using the same point system used to calculate Grand Champion. For Olympic Sparring, the top four finishers in the Cadet (12-14), Junior (15-17), and Senior (18-32) Black Belt divisions will be invited to Team Trials at the 2022 AAU Junior Olympic Games along with the current member of that team to compete under international rules (regarding a kick to the head) for the Team Member slot.
National AAU Championship medals will be awarded to the top 4 places in each division. The top 20 clubs in attendance at the 2022 AAU Taekwondo Nationals will also be awarded a custom banner. Grand Champions will also be given to the most successful all-around athlete in each age group. The Grand Champion title is one of the most challenging awards to earn as it requires the athlete to perform at a high level in multiple events across the board. Grand Champion winners, will receive a grand champion jacket made just for this year’s nationals.
Athletes will also have the chance to earn the Indomitable Spirit Award for the second year in a row. The AAU Indomitable Spirit Award is given to recognize each of those athletes who put forth an extra effort by becoming involved and competing in a variety of events and activities. This prestigious award is earned by those athletes that compete in four (4) or more events at the 2022 AAU National Taekwondo Championships.
In between the competition, competitors are welcomed to celebrate the class of 2022 AAU Hall of Fame For the Sport of Taekwondo Inductees. This is the second annual AAU Hall of Fame For the Sport of Taekwondo Dinner & Ceremony. The class of 2022 includes: Grandmaster Christina Bayley, Grandmaster Larry Beach, Grandmaster David McCloskey, Grandmaster Mechelle Smith, and Juan Miguel Moreno who will be receiving the 2022 Dr. Kyung-Ho Min Lifetime Achievement Award.
